Harmer Jeremy The Practice of English Language Teaching with DVD

Бренд:

The Practice of English Language Teaching is an essential guide for teachers of English. It explains current pedagogy to teachers who want to access the most relevant ELT practices and incorporate them into their lessons. The Practice of English Language Teaching includes: English as a world language Theories of language and language learning Learner characteristics which influence teacher decisions Guidance on managing learning Teaching language systems (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) Teaching language skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading) Practical teaching ideas The role of technology (old and new) in the classroom Assessment for language learning in the digital age About the accompanying DVD which runs for 3 hours For the fifth edition of The Practice of English Language Teaching, we decided to take a film crew out to see what English language lessons look like in different places, in different situations and, crucially, with different age groups. And so we asked a number of teachers if they would let us film them at work, doing one of their 'normal' lessons. With that in mind, we went to Ankara in Turkey and filmed two teachers, Asli Nilufer Usluel and Emel Atasoy, working with young learners. In the UK, we filmed at a residential summer school in the city of Oxford. Varinder Unlu and John Duthie taught teenagers from a variety of different countries and different language backgrounds. Back in Turkey, we had the chance to record lessons (taught by Zeynep Buyuktuna and Cigdem OEzen) for adult Turkish students who were getting ready to study at an English-medium university. In Mexico, at a private language school, we had the good fortune to film teachers Juan Pablo Monfon Jimenez, Ricardo Fajardo Cortes and Araceli Menchaca Sanchez with their adult Mexican students. In each case, after the lesson, I was able to interview the teachers on camera so that I could ask them about their lessons and about the issues that came up as a result of their teaching choices.

Dellar Hugh, Walkley Andrew Teaching Lexically

Dellar Hugh, Walkley Andrew Teaching Lexically

Бренд:

Teaching Lexically shows what a lexical view of language looks like, and explores how it differs from a more traditional 'grammar + words' view. It then considers what implications such a view might have for classroom practice. At the heart of Teaching Lexically are three main ideas: Grammar and vocabulary are both taught better in combination. Context is absolutely central. Classrooms need to be input-rich; and input needs to be useful. Teaching Lexically contains three distinctive parts which focus in turn on theory, practice and development. Part A provides a detailed exploration of the core ideas behind lexical teaching. The authors begin with the principles that explain how and why people learn, before presenting two competing views of language - 'grammar + words' (and skills) and a lexical view. They close with an in-depth exploration of how language looks when seen from a lexical perspective. Part B contains a bank of activities that puts into practice the particular principles related to such areas of teaching as vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, and so on. These activities are designed to be applied to any classroom material, and to help teachers build up their own repertoire of lexically-rooted techniques. Part C addresses some of the issues and implications involved in where and how lexical teaching may be applied. It also considers how teacher training and development can become more lexically-oriented, finally suggesting ways to develop as a lexical materials writer.

Cameron Lynne Teaching Languages to Young Learners

Cameron Lynne Teaching Languages to Young Learners

Бренд:

Recent years have seen rapid growth in the numbers of children being taught foreign languages at younger ages. While course books aimed at young learners are appearing on the market, there is scant theoretical reference in the teacher education literature. Teaching Languages to Young Learners is one of the few to develop readers' understanding of what happens in classrooms where children are being taught a foreign language. It will offer teachers and trainers a coherent theoretical framework to structure thinking about children's language learning. It gives practical advice on how to analyse and evaluate classroom activities, language use and language development. Examples from classrooms in Europe and Asia will help bring alive the realities of working with young learners of English.
